Our motivation for creating and sharing this class...
We’re publishers and we sell books for a living - not just our
own, we work on hundreds of individual titles. The
books that sell all have something in common, and the ones that
languish also have something in common. Not surprisingly, all the best-sellers have an effective marketing
plan and the non-sellers have either no marketing plan or a very
ineffective one. Pretty obvious conclusion – or in
the words of Brian Regan – “You’re really breaking some new
ground there, Copernicus!”
The most effective marketing tool these days is social media.
Social media in the form of Twitter, Facebook, Squidoo,
Linkedin and Youtube have been discussed at length, but we’ve yet to
hear of anyone truly promoting the one social media that is more
effective than of all these websites combined when it comes to
marketing books. These well-known social media websites
are critical to a complete social media plan, but the one we’ll
be discussing in this class is the foundational piece in any
truly effective social media marketing strategy.
An effective social media strategy is critical to a book’s
success. The old days of press releases and the book signings,
etc., have given way to blogs, review sites, websites, article
sites, videos and webinars. Because there is so much to choose
from, creating a social media strategy can feel overwhelming, and
looking to hire outside help with it can be a spendy proposition
(albeit likely a cost-effective one if done right).
However, there is one website that has built in blogs, built in
video, built in reviews, and built in article sites and much,
much more. That website is Amazon.com itself.
Amazon.com is in the business of selling products, and they
started out specializing in the selling of books – the easiest and most frequently
sold product on the Internet. Amazon.com takes a percentage out
of the sale of every book sold through its system, so
Amazon.com wants you to sell yours. Amazon.com creates tool
after tool after tool with the hope that as authors, you will
use them to help sell your book. It makes Amazon.com money. It
makes you money. It is a win/win for everyone.
This class is intended to introduce you, in a hands-on way, to these tools and
explain the objective of each one. The focus is on "how to",
with a strong emphasis on providing a working knowledge for
authors to the point they feel confident, comfortable, and
empowered with these powerful tools. When combined with some
cooperative marketing efforts, authors can leverage the power of
"team" to enhance the effectiveness of these tools even more.
This class will list every tool that Amazon.com has available
for authors at the present times, and we’ll keep it up to date,
because Amazon.com is constantly changing the landscape and
creating new tools and retiring others (anyone remember
Amapedia?). For our students we will provide fresh, updated,
on-going information as Amazon continues to evolve.
We’re publishers. We sell books for a living and we’ve found
that the tools that Amazon.com provides are the most effective
marketing tools for books. The other social media all need a
‘click-through’ event to take you to a buying platform...
Amazon.com is the buying platform, so any work you can do right
on the buying platform itself is advantageous. If your potential
customers are making buying decisions and the shopping cart is
in sight, you’re a whole lot closer to a sale than if those same
customers are making a buying decision where they have to click
through to a website to read more sales pitch before they can
purchase.
